Are you in the mood for a spooky flick? Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” provides the daily dose of dark for your horror needs. The film runs an hour and 59 minutes, but remains in your thoughts for days afterwards. The R rating is for suspense, violence, slight gore, and some sexual situations. These characteristics in the film never seemed too harsh or offensive.

The film was shot very creatively and eccentrically with deliberate and effective angles. The plot moved at a perfect pace, not too sluggish and not too speedy. Scene transitions were smooth and very exhilarating. The concept, actors, costumes, and plot fulfill every expectation and potential critique.

Thomas Sharpe, played by Tom Hiddleston, proved to be a very dynamic character, all the way to the ending credits. Without spoiling anything, he did an amazing job at somehow retaining the innocent characteristic that channels widespread empathy.

Jessica Chastain, who played Lucille Sharpe, portrayed amazing and complex emotion throughout the entire film. Her pain was apparent, but not overwhelming until it was necessary. Her costumes were incredibly ornate and perfectly gothic.

It’s concerning to think that modern fashion influenced the costumes, since the film was set in the gothic era. Fortunately, the costumes were very beautiful, while remaining true to the time period.

The set was mind blowing. Almost everything shot indoors was physically built. The only CGI shots were outside and some complicated inside shots. It is rare to see such a detailed, grandiose set that was physically constructed and acted upon. Technology is usually the main contributor to such thorough construction.

The plot was original and captivating. Those who find themselves predicting the future events in horror movie plot lines will be pleasantly surprised. This suspenseful thriller was refreshingly avant-garde.

The horror film “Crimson Peak” will entertain anyone who enjoys suspense and darkness. Those who appreciate great acting and aesthetic appeal will also enjoy this movie, as well as those who can appreciate ingenuity. Overall grade: A.
