A powerful weapon that can change a person’s life should have very serious safety instructions. However, teens seem to not understand the importance of knowing what the consequences can be, like the Brooklynn Mohler accident where a girl died, due to an accidental shot fired by a friend. The gun was shot, without knowledge it was loaded. From advertising their use of guns on social media to fatal accidents, some people do not understand the severity of guns. Medics see many injuries with children under the age of 18.

“The amount of responses to gun related injuries were due to a firearm being found in the home,” said paramedic, Jamie Sypiewicz, of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. According to bradycampaign.org, the medical cost for all gun violence victims, in a lifetime, is about $2.3 billion.

Sometimes parents do not tell the children the purchase of a firearm is considered, but rather parents should include children in the conversation. Parents can educate their children by taking them to gun safety classes, which can be taken at several locations, such as The Range 702 and The Gun Store. All ranges use the Eddie Eagle program, telling children to stop, don’t touch, leave the area, and tell an adult.

“You need to know how to work a gun and when to use a gun. The death of my friend Brooklyn Mohler, helped me realize how serious guns are and that I should not play with them. “Education is definitely needed,” agreed freshman, Dallas Mahan.

“I believe we can rid the curiosity by involving kids and educating them,” Sypiewicz said. According to the Brady Campaign site, an average of eight children and teens under the age of 20 die every day with the use of guns.

Adrienne Smith, freshman, voiced her opinions on guns and the appropriate time to use them.

“I believe guns are okay, if you know how to use them properly and for the right reason,” Smith said.

Stupidity and inexperience can be extremely dangerous and fatal. Help yourself and others, and get educated.
