Senior year is considered one of the greatest years of students lives, but it can also be one of the most expensive. From college applications, to graduation expenses the average family in America spends over $2,000 on senior activities alone.
One of the most costly events is the school dances. Homecoming is right around the corner, and some students are preparing for these costs already. Alidela Sebastion, current FLHS senior, said, “Homecoming can cost me up to $300, and the expenses definitely sneak up on you.” $300 is on the lower end, especially for girls, considering the average ticket price for the dance alone is $100.
Beyond school expenses, seniors also face a challenge with the cost of driving. Not only do students face the initial price of the car, but they also face the hidden costs of using a vehicle. Car insurance and gas have especially become a significant factor. Tommy Bell, current senior parent, says, “Car insurance and gas are drastically more expensive than when I was in high school.” Some studies found that it can cost up to $6,000 per year to insure teen drivers. This is a hefty price to pay compared to the average driver.
Even leaving high school can be a costly endeavor. Graduation has its own expenses, like the cap and gown. A cap and gown can cost up to $175, and some schools charge a fee for the graduation ceremony. After the ceremony, most students have graduation parties to celebrate their accomplishments. This can cost anywhere from $50 for small parties or up to $500.
College preparation is perhaps the most underestimated price of senior year. Especially the cost of college visits. Amber Hoyt, former FLHS senior parent, adds, “We spent over $3,000 for college visits last year for only a handful of universities.” Families can also overlook college application fees. Application fees are fees that colleges charge for each application, usually costing around $50. Although it might seem small, when applying to 10 or more colleges, Students will have to cough up $500.
While Senior year is meant to be celebrated and cherished for all who get to experience it, we must also be aware of the hidden costs. From school dances, transportation, and college preparation, the costs can quickly add up. Understanding and being aware of these costs can help provide a less stressful senior year and make the most of an exciting year.
