Mad About Costumes

The production of Faith’s Alice’s Wonderland is awaiting the decision whether or not it won its recent adjudication. It is no doubt it was a winner in the hearts of the Director, Cast and Crew.  The play was not the typical Alice in Wonderland we all may know and remember. This particular rendition took place in an insane asylum. Along with amazingly talented actors, came a variety of colorful, unique  and elaborate costumes.

“The costumes are breathtaking and to pick a favorite would be impossible,” said director Mrs. Emily Ball.

Mrs. Ball, the main designer for the costumes explained how she got her ideas, “I found inspiration from lots of different places: the original artwork in the CS Lewis stories, pictures I found on the Internet, Japanese artwork, and, for the animals, nature itself.” Mrs. Ball would print pictures to show her costume manager and seamstress of all of the costumes, Roxanne Andrews.

“When we begin a show Mrs. Ball gives me a costume plot of ideas and pictures that she has seen or drawings she has created that she would like incorporated into the costumes and then I take it from there and try to make her vision come to life on stage,” said Andrews.  Mrs. Ball and Roxanne both said that the costumes were a very time-consuming group effort.  Two of the big helpers in the costume department were Hannah Warner and Samantha Zbinden.

Many Audience members were buzzing about the flower costumes. Each colorful flower was designed with rows and rows of tulle. Those costumes took the longest to make. The crowd stopper costumes were also the White Rabbit’s Costume, which was made with a Scottish print trousers and white fur, and the elaborate Queen of Hearts costume, manufactured with a giant heart back.

With a great deal of help, all six of the flower’s skirts were hand sewn. “I made two of the flower skirts which took about fifteen hours,” said Warner. Warner along with Samantha Zbinden spent many hours working to help the Directors vision become a reality.  Kim Rahi, Roxanne’s friend hand painted the flower’s corsets, making them all different.

“My favorite is the Queen of Hearts costume,” said Andrews, “I love the flowers, but I also really enjoyed Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum’s costumes.”

As the cast and crew awaits the decision, audience members will remain in awe over the brilliant designs of the costumes. From the Cheshire Cat, to Alice herself one thing is for sure, we are all mad about the costumes!
