Ponytails with a purpose

Children all around the world suffer from hair loss due to medical conditions with no cure. The non-profit organization, Locks of Love, provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children throughout the United States and Canada.

Locks of Love allows children to face their peers by restoring their self-confidence and providing them with a sense of normalcy.

Several students, family members, and friends of Faith Lutheran donated ponytails that were at least 10 inches during the Locks of Love event organized by Faith Lutheran.

“I decided to participate in Locks of Love because I think it is a great cause, and I’ve always wanted to donate my hair,” said Senior Haley Southwick, who gave 11 inches.

This year, Faith Lutheran donated ten ponytails to the organization.

“We cut 9 and an anonymous person dropped a ponytail off in the front office,” said Senior Angelina Cannito.

Along with Southwick, Senior Abby Coffing, Junior Hannah Beery, Sixth grader Sophia Dominguez, Third grader, Alexus Naugle from Faith Lutheran Academy, and four of alumni Courtney Hansens’s nieces, Hannah Hansen, Ruthie Hansen, Leilani Bisera, and Talia Hansen participated in the event.

Abby Coffing, Senior, said, “[my] co-worker was diagnosed with Leukemia and she was talking about how bad it was to lose her hair and how she was scared.”

This inspired Coffing to donate her hair to children who are not as fortunate.

A big thanks goes out to those who planned and participated in the project; because of their generosity, many children will receive a gift of hope that will help restore their courage.
