A heartbreaking accident in northeast Las Vegas has left the community mourning the loss of a young boy and demanding more awareness about electric scooter and e-bike safety.
On October 23, 2025, a 10-year-old boy, identified as Marquis Abraham, was killed and a 9-year-old boy injured after being struck by a car while riding an electric scooter. The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. near Butternut Lane and Charnut Lane, close to Lake Mead Boulevard and Pecos Road.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), the children were riding north on Charnut Lane when a 44-year-old woman driving west on Butternut Lane turned into the intersection and collided with them. Marquis died at the scene, while the other boy was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police confirmed the driver remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment.
This incident marks the 130th traffic-related fatality in Las Vegas this year, highlighting growing safety concerns surrounding electric scooters and bikes. Authorities say these devices are becoming more common among minors, but many riders don’t understand the traffic rules or wear proper safety gear.
“These scooters can reach high speeds, and one wrong move can lead to tragedy,” said an LVMPD traffic officer. “Kids need to know how to ride safely, and drivers must slow down in neighborhoods.”
In response to recent accidents, city leaders have passed new safety ordinances requiring minors to wear helmets and for all e-devices to have working lights and reflectors when used on public roads. While we don’t have as many students riding bikes or scooters to school, there still needs to be the same rules of the road. Max Arndt, a student at Faith Lutheran does ride a electric scooter from time to time, “I enjoy riding my scooter, but I think kids need to be more careful of how they ride it and what the surroundings are when they are doing it.”
Neighbors in the area have built a small memorial with flowers, balloons, and candles to honor Marquis. Many hope his story raises awareness about road safety and encourages families to have conversations about the risks of riding electric scooters.
This tragedy serves as a painful reminder that safety is a shared responsibility. Both drivers and riders must stay alert, follow the rules of the road, and look out for one another to prevent future accidents.
