Homecoming takes on Gatsby

Faith Lutheran’s 2014 homecoming dance had the theme of The Great Gatsby, with elegant and draping decor, highlighting the beginning of the school year. Sydney Elliott, freshman class president, gave some insight on the plans of decorating exactly to the theme.

“We are trying to keep it very classy, as if you are right in the Gatsby movie,” Elliott said, prior to the dance. The decorations were exactly that, with sheer fabric coming down from a sparkling chandelier. According to Liva Faselt, senior and student body president, that specific decorations were to be kept a secret to all student body members until the night of the dance.

“The main decor is kind of a surprise this year, we are doing something really big,” Faselt said during homecoming week. Faselt also said they were trying to keep it simple, with more of the big details rather than smaller ones. The dance was surely a grand affair, with big, complicated centerpieces, a gazebo, and a professional DJ.

Mrs. Buuck, Director of Student Life and head of the homecoming events, explained the overall dance and how much work went into it.

It took, “20 hours to put everything in place and months to gather everything together.  The most stressful part of planning homecoming is whether or not students will actually attend the events!” Buuck said. According to Faselt, Elliott, and Alex Giuliani, the dance had a big budget, but went over the designated amount of money in several areas. Giuliani, senior and STUCO member, had comments on the budget and why they went over.

“I believe the budget was around $12,000, but we went over. It’s over budget because we just wanted to put on the best dance and the best couple of hours as we can for the students here at Faith Lutheran because they work so hard everyday in the classroom,” Giuliani said before the night of the dance. Joe Choo, treasurer, believes the most expensive item was the DJ, as he is very popular throughout Las Vegas.

FLHS freshman, Lauren Haight, believes “The music was boring at times, as a single song dragged on for several minutes.”

The amount STUCO spent was perfect, as the hard work and detailing showed in the beauty of the venue. The student’s bright faces displayed how much fun they were having, and the memories that will stay with them for years to come. Students deserved a night like homecoming, through their hard work in school and various extracurricular. Adrenaline rushing, heart thumping, smiles showing, homecoming was surely the best night of the year.
