As Thanksgiving Day approaches, people all over American have begun to prepare for their large, delicious feast. Whether it’s squeezing in extra workouts at the gym or digging through drawers to find the old stretchy pants, people know that Thanksgiving is famous for great food and lots of it. After all, the turkey is not the only thing getting stuffed.

Students around Faith Lutheran were asked which dinner dish is their favorite on Thanksgiving. Their options to choose from were turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

Pumpkin pie came in first place winning the title as students’ favorite Thanksgiving dinner dish. Stuffing came in at a close second followed by mashed potatoes and gravy in third. However, not all people follow the classic Thanksgiving dinner. Junior, Angelina Cannito, said, “I usually have stuffing and steak on Thanksgiving because I am not a big fan of turkey or ham.”

Nutrition does not usually come to mind when thinking of Thanksgiving dinner. The New York Times’ Tara Parker-Pope estimated that the average Thanksgiving dinner is between 2,500 and 4,500 calories. That’s nearly twice the recommended daily allowance in one sitting! Are you shocked? This is America after all; the country known for it’s increasing obesity rates.

However, Thanksgiving is not all about the amazing food or even a time to count calories. People all over America come together on this special day to enjoy each other’s company and recognize the things they are most thankful for. Haley Vinson, junior, is most thankful for her fireplace because it keeps her warm and it looks pretty. Other students agreed that they are thankful for spending time with their friends and family. Although, Brandon Fuentes, junior, said he is most thankful for his “sweet skills.”

So while enjoying good food with good people on this Thanksgiving, take the time to think about everything you have been blessed with and remember to appreciate the little things in life.
