Last Man, Last Whistle, Last Minute

Last Man, Last Whistle, Last Minute

It was a game that will be remembered forever. It was a game against time, but in the end, time won.

Coach Morril definitely thought the girls had a good shot at winning, “I thought we had an excellent chance of beating South Tahoe and were well prepared to play. I felt confident in what we could do as a team… I watched film in preparation, as well as ran specific drills in practice to prepare for the game.  I wanted us to get ready to do specific tactics that would allow us to do well.”

The girls started off with the ball, but South Tahoe ended up with it. South Tahoe started out pretty strong scoring a goal within the first minute and a half. Within 90 seconds, South Tahoe scored, which gave them a lot more confidence. “Their sweeper was just clearing the ball on her first touch…we continued to try and force it in the middle when it appeared we had a better chance going outside,” said Coach Bob Chinn. Although the team tried a different tactic, South Tahoe scored again.

At this point, most teams would give up, but not Faith Lutheran. “Second half was all ours, from start to end we played good, hard soccer. We battled harder and were winning possession more on 50/50 balls,” said Coach Chinn.

Finally, the Faith Crusaders had a penalty kick in the box with .05 seconds to go. Emily Neighbors easily made it, but the time had run out. Coach Morrill later stated, “I think we were as ready as we were going to be.  At that point in the season, you’re either ready or you’re not.  The two goals we gave up against South Tahoe were mental mistakes, but that’s how it goes sometimes.”

It was a very hard loss for all the girls, but everyone on the team picked each other up. “We became more like a family this year and I’m so proud of my team,” said Kristi Chinn.

“The team has an excellent chance of being successful and competing for a League, Region, and State Championship,” and expects the team to, “have a lot of talent, which is a good indicator for success.” Morgan Bracey states that, “although some of the players may be doubting it now, the team will still be solid next year. Since they are losing 5 starters, there are positions to fill but I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised with how things come together.” Both Coaches are “[extremely] proud of this team and the class and the fight that they showed.” Along with her coaches, Morgan Bracey is also, “incredibly proud of how as a team everyone came together. Especially in the last few minutes of our last game this season, every single player kept fighting.”

“We played to the last man, the last whistle, and the last minute,” said senior, Morgan “Momo” Bracey.
