Taking a moment to remember

The entire student body takes a moment to remember that tragic events of September 11. Every student from sixth grade to seniors lined the amphitheater; not a single space of the side walk left open. As Senior, Angelina Cannito, took the mic in the center of the grass area, she spoke of the agenda: the women’s ensemble  would sing the national anthem first and then she would pray and we would have a moment of silence to remember.

After giving instructions, Angelia turned to queue the awaiting group of girls in a half circle before her. Jenny Navoa, a member of women’s ensemble, took the mic and centered it between the group. Then came the beautiful, almost enchanting, sounds of somber….”Oh say, can you see…”

Looks of blank stares and bowed heads took over the crowd of students and faculty as the song of our nation boomed through their ears. Many over-looking the various flags that were pinned across the grass in the form of “9 – 11”. When the women reached their final note, claps eroded from the student body in remembrance of that day which shall never be forgotten.

“The silence (after the singing) was intense; it made me think back of that exact day,” said Junior, Joshua Harmony.

And for a moment, time stood still here at Faith Lutheran High School. The wind still blew and the leaves still fell, but as a student body, we all stood in somber silence.

“You may go back to your first block classes.” Angelina dismissed the crowd.

Walking away, the only things left at the sight were prayers, and the flags still waving along with the wind in the presence of God.
