Faith Lutheran has a very packed and eventful spirit week leading up to the homecoming dance. One of the very awaited and highly attended events is the girl’s powderpuff kickball tournament. Originally being a flag football tournament, girls from each grade come together and form a team to represent their grade.

Mr. Bowline, assistant principal, explained why he decided to change the event from flag football to kickball. “We used to do flag football, but we had to switch to kickball so that we could get more students involved because a lot of the in-season athletes were not allowed to do it because of possible case of injury.”

This competition is student-ran, with fellow male peers coaching the team for their grade. Nathaniel Meredith, head coach for the sophomore team, says he expects his team to go “undefeated; we have a strong team with Bailey Friel as our starting pitcher and many other great players that will make us hard to beat. I coach equally and I don’t play favorites which makes it a better experience for the players. I also scout the competition so we have a much better chance of winning even though we have no competition.”

Many girls participate in this competition every year to represent their grade and show school spirit. Sophomore Alexi Johnson says, “I’m for sure going to participate in powderpuff this year so that the sophomores can win!” Although many people just participate for fun, some people take it very seriously due to their desire to win the tournament. For example, Briggs Garrison, sophomore assistant coach explained “I think sophomores are definitely going not just win, but go undefeated. We have great players, great prospects out on the field, and a great coaching staff which will make this season great, but most of all we have to believe in ourselves and each other in order to get a guaranteed win.”
